PE and Sports Premium 2015 - 2016

What is the PE and Sports Premium?

Over the last three academic years, every primary school in the UK has been allocated a PE and Sport Premium, which is to be used to improve the provision of PE and sport for the benefit of pupils. St Clare's Primary School has been allocated £8500 this year.

How are we using the funding to improve PE and Sport in our school?

Last year the majority of the premium was used on the services provided to us by the North West Leicestershire School Sports Partnership (NWLSSP) as are most other primary schools in North West Leicestershire. This provision includes:

  • A qualified sports coach providing continuing professional development for all our staff to enhance their PE teaching.
  • A variety of different sports competitions (School Games Level 1/2/3) and participation festivals throughout the year.
  • Further training and education opportunities for our staff to continue to improve their PE teaching.

In addition there was Swimming Training for three teachers including a Level 2 Teaching Aquatics qualification as well as joining the Club Activ 8 Scheme. This Scheme allows all pupils to receive weekly points during term time which is based on the price of a weekly swim session. The points can also be saved and used for other activities at the Leisure Centres. Springboards and replacement gymnastics equipment were also purchased to ensure that our pupils benefitted fully from the specialist gymnastics coach hired this year.

This year, as well as the services provided by NWLSSP and membership of the Club Activ 8 Scheme the premium is being used for the following:

  •  A specialist gymnastics sports coach is being employed to further develop the skills and knowledge of our teachers. After consultation with staff this was highlighted as an area that needed improvement.
  • Swimming training is being undertaken by two teachers.
  • Later on this year, a qualified badminton coach will introduce this sport to Years 4 and 5.
  • For the whole school a Mini Archery Taster Day has also been booked.

Impact on the children

Last year, due to the structure provided by the NWLSSP, approximately 100 children participated in around 20 events. These children were well distributed across all age ranges and the events included:

  • tag rugby
  • multiskills
  • multisports
  • cricket
  • football
  • New Age kurling
  • boccia
  • swimming
  • athletics
  • basketball
  • tri-golf
  • tennis
  • dodgeball

The Club Activ 8 Scheme increased sport participation as 28 children joined the scheme. They used the facilities at the local Leisure Centre to take part in a number of sports including table tennis, badminton, football and swimming.

The Swimming Training undertaken by the teachers increased attainment by the children in Years 2 - 6. Their confidence in the water improved and the number of non swimmers in Key Stage 2 were significantly reduced from 16 to 5.
